    More than 95% of the people in Poland are Roman Catholic. The rest are Polish Autocephalous, Orthodox, Russian and Greek Orthodox, Protestant, Jewish, or Muslim.
    Poland shares its borders with the Russian Federation, Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania, the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Germany, and the Baltic Sea. The northern part of Poland is filled with many hills, lakes and islands joined together by rivers and canals. In the rest of Poland, there are the Sudety Mountains which run along the border with the Czech Republic, and the Tatra Mountains. The Tetra Mountains separate Poland and the Slovak Republic. On the west side of Poland, the River Oder forms a border with Germany.
    The current Head of State in Poland is President Lech Kaczynski since 2005. The current Head of Government is Donald Tusk since 2007. The President of Poland, Kaczynski, holds very few powers, and the Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, is the one who has patched up conflicts with Germany and Russia caused by Tusk's predecessor. Before Tusk's role as Prime Minister, Poland alienated many other EU countries due to the nationalist rhetoric and conservative agenda. At this time, Tusk works hard to repair the problems with other countries and make peace.
    The architecture of many buildings in Poland reflect its interest in perserving the past. These buildings represent a unique type of architecture, as seen in the picture below, which expresses a degree of value on the arts. Furthermore, there are many museums, art galleries, and theaters throughout Poland, such as the National Museum of Poland or the Maly Theater in Warsaw.

    Artist Profile : Jan Matejko

    Jan Matejko, also known as Jan Mateyko, was born June 24, 1838 and died on November 1, 1893. He was born in Krakow. Matejko's father, a tutor and musician, was a Czech from the village of Roudnice and his mother, Joanna Karolina Rossberg, was half-German and half-Polish. After marrying, they had eleven children. Jan Matejko was their ninth child. As a child, Matejko loved history, and he always staged historical tableaus with his brothers and sisters, which usually involved a Polish King. He was considered a horrible student, but took great interest in drawing. At the age of 13, he was enrolled in the Krakow School of Fine Arts. Matejko grew to love drawing and painting, but his father did not support it and believed that it was "just a form of entertainment which would not put bread on the table." It was one of Matejko's brothers who persuaded Matejko to follow his dreams of being an artist. However, even though Matejko was a great artist, at one point he was considered a "starving artist" because his artwork did not guarantee financial success right away. In fact, he was so poor that he sometimes lived off only stale bread and had to move to a smaller studio in the basement of a building that was on a street that was very dark and secluded. It took some time for his artwork to finally sell, but once people saw his work, they were quickly drawn to the unique political paintings that he created.
    Jan Matejko is considered one of the most famous painters in Poland. He was known for his paintings of historically-popular political and military events in Poland. His most popular pieces are oil on canvas paintings. Some of these paintings are "Battle of Grunwald" (pictured below), "Year 1863-Polonia" (pictured below), "Kosciuszko at the Battle of Raclawice," "Virgin of Orleans," and "King John's Casimir's Oath." He was inspired by politics and the events that Poland participated in, and as a result, he found great interest in painting some of the events that took place.

    Arts Organization : Zacheta State Gallery of Art
    The Zacheta State Gallery of Art is located in the city of Warsaw. Its history is traced back to 1860, when the Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts was founded. Its mission was to promote the arts for both local artists and the society at large. The Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts began to create a national collection and tried to help young artists get their name out and share their work with the public. They were also trying to stimulate an interest in the arts from the public. During 1898 and 1900, the Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts and supporters in the public gave the Society the opportunity to have a permanent home by donating the funds for it. This building ended up being the only one in Warsaw's city center that survived World War II. Today, the gallery seeks to enrich the nation's social and cultural life. They also try to share art and promote art abroad. Furthermore, the gallery is now home to over 600 paintings, as well as 2,600 paper works, such as graphic works and drawings, and some sculptures and fabric works. The director of the gallery is Agnieszka Morawinska.
    The Zacheta State Gallery of Art also tries to reach out to the public. They do this through hosting programs and workshops. They work directly with schools to allow the children to explore the artwork and learn more about art and the history involving it. They also welcome field trips by schools to explore the gallery and see the artwork. Workshops, on the other hand, are held in an effort to provide art classes to the community, as the gallery knows that art education is rare in Poland.
    Teacher Training Programs:
    In Poland, teachers must have a higher education qualification. Before being able to apply for admissions to gain a higher education, they must be awarded a "maturity certificate." This certificate means that they wish to supplement their vocational education, which is extremely common in Poland during their secondary education. For primary and lower level secondary (middle/junior high) teachers, they need to have a "licencjat", which is identical to a Bachelor's degree in the United States. With this degree, they are certified to teach only primary grades and lower level secondary grades. If they want to teacher higher secondary (high school) grades, they must have a "magister" degree, which is identical to a Master's degree in the United States. It is the desire of Poland's education system that a teacher be competent to teach two subjects, be computer literate, and have good knowledge of a foreign language. The problem with these requests are that they are very general, and Poland's education system offers no further explanation of what this "competency" or "further knowledge" exactly is. In terms of any training in the arts, a teacher does not have to be trained in them unless they want to specifically be an art or music teacher. In that case, they must go to school for two additional years of training in the arts. Therefore, Poland extremely lacks the inclusion of arts in the training of their teachers.
    Funding for Arts Education Programs:
    The students in Poland's public schools are slightly engaged in music and art classes. While these subjects are not a big part of their education system, they do offer them to their students. The Ministry of Education supports art and music classes at the primary and secondary level, and cultural centers support these basic school programs for arts education. However, the requirements for art and music classes are lacking, but no further funding is given toward improving them. Poland's government has decided that they are not going to fund art education programs any further because they feel that they do not have adequate funding to do so. However, there are private art institutions that students may attend, but these are funded solely by outsiders. Organizations, parents, and other citizens, who believe that arts are a necessary component of a well-rounded education, fund these private art schools.
    Conclusion:
    The education in Poland is very similar to my education here in the United States. Growing up, I had music classes and art classes up until 6th grade. These classes only met once a week, therefore, not much value was placed on the arts. After 6th grade, we were able to decide whether we wanted to take music or art classes as electives. I chose to take art, but not music, therefore I had no further experience with music after that. Even my art classes were very limited, as we could only take one or two semesters of art throughout all of middle school and high school. Furthermore, if students did take more art classes, they were warned by the guidance counselors that they might be viewed by potential colleges as being "slackers" for not taking math or science classes instead. This is similar to the education that Poland offers their students. They are offered very few art and music classes. What really surprised me about Poland's practices was the fact that they try to preserve their country's culture and art by keeping alive the old, unique buildings with interesting designs and details, yet they do not put much effort into bettering their arts education in the schools. I realize that the schools may not have extra money, however, It makes me wonder what they truly value as a country. I find it surprising that they choose to not put any additional money towards art education.

    All Austrian children are allowed free schooling and transportation to and from school as well as free textbooks. Their educational system is considered one of the best in the world and Austria has a literacy success rate of 99%. The goals of their elementary students include raising the children “to reflect the Austrian community spirit of peace and compromise as means of resolving conflict. They are taught to respect others and to appreciate the arts, their beautiful environment, and their heritage.”

    Dieter Schwertberger, most commonly known as De Es, was born in Gresten, Lower-Austria. He graduated from the Engineering School of Vienna then closely followed a painter, Professor Fuchs, from the Vienna Academy. De Es is considered a fundamental character in the Fantastic Art movement. He spent twelve years of his life working in New York, but has moved back to Austria and continued to live there since 1986. His works are most widely known for both quality and for the variety of styles and periods that he paints. The works that De Es spends most of his time on are works that are impressionistic and more abstract than his early works.

    I think its awesome that the Austrian government provides free schooling to all Austrian students. I'm sure its not as smooth as it sounds, but its a great concept to give all hard working students the same opportunity regardless of the income of their family. It seems like a good way to lessen the gap between the rich and the poor.

    This is different from the my own personal experience with arts education because our school district began educating us about the arts , like music, art, and drama in elementary school, unlike Jamaica where these subjects usually don’t make it into the curriculum until secondary education . Even in kindergarten I remember singing songs and having drawing time.

Their primary focus is on projects that encourage development, not so much commercial projects that bring some type of economic gain.
